Yamaha FG-850
The Yamaha FG-850 is the all-mahogany FG, with a solid mahogany top, mahogany back and sides, and a nato neck. The all-mahogany construction produces a warm, woody voice with rich middle frequencies and less of the spruce sparkle of its sibling FGs. Newly developed scalloped bracing, designed through Yamaha's R&D acoustic analysis rather than tradition, produces a louder low and mid response than the older FG bracing patterns. The FG-850 was not distributed in the US market and features a three-piece back. It passed through four label eras: tan (1972–1975), black (1974–1977), orange (1974–1985, Japan only), and white oval (1977–2001, Taiwan only), making label identification a reliable dating tool.
