Yamaha FG-401
The Yamaha FG-401 is a dreadnought produced from 1975 through 1999, built in both Japan and Taiwan. Its label history spans four distinct eras useful for dating a given example: the tan label ran from 1972 to 1975 across Japan and Taiwan production; the black label appeared from 1974 to 1977, also covering both countries; the orange label ran from 1974 to 1985 on Japanese-made instruments only; and the white oval label was used from 1977 to 2001 on Taiwan production exclusively. Tops were spruce or Ezo spruce, with back and sides in rosewood, coral, or nato, and necks in mahogany, African mahogany, or nato depending on the production run. The back construction on at least some examples is three-piece. No specific players are documented in association with this model. No US distribution has been noted in available sources.
