Yamaha FG-401
The Yamaha FG-401 is a dreadnought produced from 1975 through 1999, built in both Japan and Taiwan. Its label history is useful for dating individual examples: the tan label ran from 1972 to 1975 across Japan and Taiwan, the black label from 1974 to 1977 across both countries, the orange label from 1974 to 1985 in Japan only, and the white oval label from 1977 to 2001 in Taiwan only. Tops are spruce or Ezo spruce, back and sides are nato, rosewood, or coral rosewood, and necks are mahogany, African, or nato depending on the era and production site. The source text notes the FG-401 as the top of the orange-label line, with coral rosewood specified for back and sides on Japanese examples, and describes a three-piece back construction on at least one documented example. No documented notable players are on record. No US distribution has been noted in available sources.
