Yamaha FG-301
The Yamaha FG-301 is a dreadnought produced from 1975 to 1978, built in both Japan and Taiwan, featuring an Ezo spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, and an African mahogany neck. Buyers dating their instrument should pay close attention to the label: tan labels were used from 1972 to 1975 in both Japan and Taiwan, black labels from 1974 to 1977 in both countries, orange labels from 1974 to 1985 in Japan only, and white oval labels from 1977 to 2001 in Taiwan only. A three-piece back construction has been noted on some examples. Owners describe good chord separation and pleasant overtones, with the kind of articulate response that comes from solid-wood-feeling laminate over rosewood. The model responds well to both strumming and fingerpicking. Survivors often turn up with light pick-holder discoloration on the upper bout, since these were a popular working guitar. No documented professional players are currently on record for this model.
