Yamaha FG-300

The Yamaha FG-300 is a jumbo acoustic guitar produced by Yamaha from 1968 to 1976 in Japan and Taiwan, featuring a spruce top, rosewood back and sides, and a mahogany neck. It was one of Yamaha's top models of the era, built to compete directly with the Gibson Hummingbird, with a matching western-style hummingbird pickguard and decorative fretboard inlays. The guitar passed through four label eras during its production run: the Red label (1967–1972, Japan and Taiwan), the Tan label (1972–1975, Japan and Taiwan), the Black label (1974–1977, Japan and Taiwan), and the Orange label (1974–1985, Japan only), making label identification a reliable tool for buyers attempting to date a specific example. The voice is strong-projecting and warm. On surviving examples, the original pickguard is prone to deterioration, and replica replacements replicating the ornate hummingbird design are available from third-party makers who base their dimensions directly on original FG-300 and FG-350 pickguards. No notable players are formally documented with the model.
