Yamaha FG-251
The Yamaha FG-251 is a dreadnought acoustic produced from 1975 to 1978 in Japan and Taiwan. Its construction centers on an Ezo spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, and a nato neck. Yamaha selected palisander rosewood as a stand-in for Brazilian rosewood at the time, and Japanese owners speculate the wood is actually Madagascar rosewood. The result is a clear, defined response that owners describe as similar in character to Brazilian rosewood examples. Buyers dating their instrument should know the FG-251 spans four label eras: the tan label ran from 1972 to 1975 and appeared on both Japanese and Taiwanese guitars; the black label followed from 1974 to 1977, also covering both countries; the orange label ran from 1974 to 1985 and is exclusive to Japanese production; and the white oval label, covering 1977 to 2001, identifies Taiwanese origin only. No players have been documented in association with this model.
