Yamaha FG-201

The Yamaha FG-201 is a dreadnought acoustic guitar produced from 1975 to 1978, built in both Japan and Taiwan. The top is spruce, with Queensland walnut back and sides and a nato neck. The Ezo spruce on these tops, sourced from northern Hokkaido, is now a protected species and is part of why owners keep coming back to this model. The voice is lively and clear, and survivors tend to have meat left on the saddle for action adjustments. Buyers dating their instrument should be familiar with the label history: the tan label ran from 1972 to 1975 and appeared on guitars from both Japan and Taiwan; the black label covered 1974 to 1977, also across both production sites; the orange label ran from 1974 to 1985 and was used on Japanese-made examples only; and the white oval label, spanning 1977 to 2001, identifies Taiwanese production. No players have been documented in association with this model.
