Yamaha FG-2000
The Yamaha FG-2000 is one of the most coveted guitars in the entire FG lineup, produced from 1971 to 1975 in jumbo body format. Construction features a solid Ezo spruce top with solid Jacaranda back and sides — a wood closely related to Brazilian rosewood and sometimes considered identical to it, though definitive testing remains rare — paired with a Honduras mahogany neck and notably light bracing that extracts exceptional acoustic response from the instrument. James Taylor is among the documented players associated with this model, lending it considerable cachet among collectors. Dating an FG-2000 relies heavily on its label: red labels cover 1967–1972, tan labels 1972–1975, black labels 1974–1977, and orange labels 1974–1985, with orange being Japan-only production. The FG-2000 falls within the red and tan label periods exclusively. These guitars are genuinely scarce, with surviving examples in clean condition regularly commanding several thousand dollars. The FG-2500, its 12-string slot-head sibling, was produced alongside it during the same window.
