Yamaha FG-180J

The Yamaha FG-180J is a jumbo-bodied flattop produced between 1974 and 1975, built in Japan with a spruce top and mahogany back, sides, and neck. Its relatively brief production window means examples surface less frequently than longer-running FG models. Guitars from this period can carry one of three label types: the tan label used from 1972 to 1975, the black rectangular label used from 1974 to 1977, and the orange label used from 1974 to 1985 — all three on Japanese-made instruments. The black label examples often display the Hamamatsu, Shizuoka address alongside an ink-stamped tuning fork logo on the soundhole brace, with the tuning fork also appearing on the headstock in place of the Yamaha wordmark.
