Yamaha FG-170
The Yamaha FG-170 is a folk-size acoustic produced from 1972 to 1974, built in both Japan and Taiwan, with a spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a mahogany neck. Compared to the dreadnought FG-180, it sits a little quieter with a more balanced response and less low-end boom, which players say makes it better suited to fingerpicking, though the narrow saddle string spacing tightens that work up. The 24.88-inch scale is shared with most of the vintage FG line. Guitars from this span may carry a tan label (1972–1975) or a black label (1974–1977), both used in Japan and Taiwan, making the label one of the more reliable clues for dating a specific example. No players have been formally documented with this model.
